It’s Your Time to Volunteer!

May 1st is the opening date to file your application to serve on one of our committees.  Applications will be available at the Administration Office.  They are also available online under the “Committees” pulldown (instructions and information are on the form) and during Courier Days at the “Volunteerism” table.  You are encouraged to apply for the Committee of your choosing.

You might want to take a look at last year’s March edition of the eCourier on your computer.  The lead article presents a vignette of Thaddeus, a resident of Sun City, and his road to volunteering.  He learned that retirement didn’t mean doing nothing.  It meant devoting some time to contribute his life skills for the betterment of our Community.  What life skills do you have to contribute?

Even if you are just curious about how things fit together at Sun City Roseville, visit committee meetings, talk to committee members, talk to Board members and ask questions about what they do that interest you.  All would be eager to talk to you.

We’ve made it even easier to obtain information about volunteering for committee positions as well as having a bit of fun.  We are having a Volunteerism Faire scheduled for Thursday, April 27th from 10 am to Noon in the Ballroom; all our committees will be introduced to you.  You will have the opportunity to talk to committee representatives.  They will have literature, handouts and illustrations of what their role is in Sun City.  They will have volunteer applications available too.

The theme of the Faire is “Serving Makes You Younger”.  It’s a fact and we’ll have a special fun speaker to confirm it.  There are refreshments, information and entertainment.  And it’s free.  Plus, we will be offering a $50 SCR Gift Card to a lucky resident who attends.  How good is that!

By volunteering to serve on a committee you meet a lot of interesting people and you learn how our Association really works.  More importantly you contribute to preserving and enhancing our community’s amenities and lifestyle.  It’s a nice place to live.  Please help us keep it that way.

It’s not too early to announce the entertainment lineup for the spring and summer months! Your Activities Department has prepared entertainment dates through August 2017 so you can plan accordingly. Do you have family and/or friends coming to visit?  Show them how much fun it is to live in Sun City Roseville!  Whether it’s a comedy show, a dance band, a folk band, or a Las Vegas style revue, we’ve got something for everyone.  As a reminder, for Onsite Events you may purchase up to ten tickets (residents & non resident guests) and you may reserve a table of ten.  Please see the Activities Department Policy & Procedures located at the Activities Desk for detailed information on registering for onsite events, day tours and extended travel.

The annual Home & Health Resources Expo will be held on Wednesday, April 19 in the Timber Creek Ballroom from 9:00AM-1:00PM.  Visit with over fifty vendors and enter for a free drawing for a variety of fabulous items!

Has everyone heard about Sun City Showtime scheduled for September 22, 2017? Your Activities Department is delighted to partner with residents Gary and Vivian Ellison. Gary and Vivian have been residents in Sun City Roseville since 2012.   Prior to that, they resided in People Creek, Arizona for 12 years and earned acclaimed recognition for the various stage productions they produced and directed.  Vivian and Gary hosted an informational meeting on April 14.  If you were not able to attend, please reach out to the Vivian or Gary at 872-1220. This promises to be a big production in Sun City Roseville with resident participation required!

As the community and your Board of Directors gear up for a Volunteerism Faire on April 27 at 10:00AM in the Ballroom, you may also want to consider registering for “Avanti”, a two part Workshop covering what to do in  your retirement years.  Resident Rosemary Marino leads this two-part workshop scheduled for May 2 & May 16 in the Aspen Room.  Please register in advance at the Activities Monitor Desk.

Tickets are currently available for two Ballroom performances:  Jason Love, Comedian, scheduled for Monday, May 8 at 7:00PM and Entertainer William Florian, scheduled for Friday, May 26 at 7:00PM.

CITIZENS PATROL / NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Residential Security – Part One of a Series

At our March monthly meeting, we communicated eight components of residential security, utilizing a slide show and sample products, covering concepts from simple hardware applications to wifi monitoring systems.  This series of articles will recap the material.

We presented three objectives:

  1. To show you how to create a visual deterrent, adopting measures which are so obvious as to dissuade a burglar. They include lighting, signage, cameras, alarms and iron doors.
  1. To show you how to create a time delay, understanding that burglars typically abandoned their attempt after 3 to 5 minutes.
  1. To persuade you to actively, and habitually, think about security.

We understand that not everything we teach and preach applies to every home model and resident.  We do not intend to scare you, but we hope it will be obvious to you that if you adopt the concepts and methods which apply to your home and lifestyle, they will clearly make you safer.

The Neighbor Component

This is the most important of the eight components, and is, of course, the heart of our Neighborhood Watch program.  Neighborhood Watch concepts work in our community because Sun City folks do not prey on each other.  Neighbors here can safely get to know each other, and that builds friendships and trust.  A neighbors-helping-neighbors mindset combines life safety and residential security matters.

Trust leads to the exchange of house keys and, as applicable, setting up welfare check signals.  (If my curtains are not open by 9:00 am, call me.)

Trusting neighbors provide each other with vacations itineraries, cell phone and relative contact information, and watch out for each other’s package deliveries.  Good neighbors do not have to become daily wine and cheese buddies, and are not “nosey neighbors”.  Rather, they generally know enough about each other that they quickly recognize suspicious circumstances, persons and/or vehicles and promptly call the police.

Additionally, trusting neighbors exchange information about scams, door-to-door solicitors, and other public safety topics such as those distributed via the Neighborhood Watch email tree.  (If you are not receiving these emails, contact me.)

I draw your attention to the 3rd objective above.  The more time you spend thinking of the Neighbor Component, the better it works and the safer all of us become.

The Front Yard and Porch Component

LIGHTING     Nighttime thieves want to be the only ones with light.

Drive down Whistlestop Way from Timberrose Way after dark.  Compare lighting on those residences against your neighborhood and ask yourselves which a thief would prefer.  We advocate leaving all front lighting on overnight, or at least having motion sensors, remote control, or timers.

LANDSCAPE     Impenetrable shrubbery, such as holly or manzanita, can serve as a physical barrier to keep people from approaching your windows.  A planter box or large pot can hide delivered packages.  Landscape should not, however, block the view of your front porch.

CAMERAS     Video cameras are becoming very affordable, whether overt or concealed.  Even dummy cameras have a deterrent effect, but, if you get an actual camera system, look into storage capabilities.  Cameras can be hard wired or wifi, part of a doorbell or lighting system, and can have remote viewing.

WINDOW SECURITY     You can Google this subject for the many hardware and lock solutions available for both vertical and horizontal sliding windows and doors, or have a chat with a hardware store employee.  And, simply laying a dowel stick, or length of plastic pipe, in the track of horizontal sliders is quite effective.

BreakingWindow

Although burglars do not like to break glass because of the noise, they sometimes do, mostly in the back yard or on fixed panels next to the front door.  One option is a clear film applied to the glass itself.  Once in place over clean glass, it becomes the cleanable surface, and is as impervious to window breaking as the picture shows.  Google “protective window film” and read up on installation issues.

Please remember that not only are bars over windows prohibited by our CC&R’s, but they create a death trap in the event of fire.

DOORS     Doors are certainly a part of the Front Yard and Porch Component, but the components overlap, so I will weave all that together next month.

Catering Trends:  What’s New?  What’s Now?  What’s Next?

weddingFoodSmall plates.  Last-minute bookings.  New twists on classic comfort food.  Using the internet for everything from the proposal to staff clocking in for their shifts.  None of these is new, but they are all trends for the catering business in 2017.  Trends in catering don’t suddenly happen.  They’re slow expansions of ideas from one end of the country-or the world-to the other.

As one part of the country is deciding that mashed potato bars are getting boring, customers in another area, or at a different price point, have just discovered them and can’t wait to treat their guests to this “new” idea.

During the recession, a number of struggling small caterers dropped out of the business, meaning that there was less competition when customers started coming back.  But the return back to “normal” depends on where your company is, and “normal” doesn’t mean you’ll be doing the same kind of business you did in 2007.

Customers are smarter than ever, about everything except pricing.  They are more likely to know what kind of menus and décor they want, but they still don’t understand just how much it costs to have it turn out the way they want.  That’s the part they don’t show you on The Food Network!

Local menus are more popular than ethnic cuisine in many areas.  The sit-down, plated dinner is not endangered, but alternatives are becoming more popular, from entire meals served on small plates, butlered or from stations, to dessert only or hors d’oeuvre-only events.

Guests want to be entertained by the catering.  That can be as simple as a chef who chats up the guests while serving or as complex as a menu item that foams, sizzles or bursts in some amazing way.

Not many people really know what “artisanal” means, but it sure sounds good.  Just five years ago, you virtually never heard anything described as artisanal, but today’s discerning catering customers demand it-even if they couldn’t tell you what it is.

Wedding couples are busy and want as many services as you can possibly provide.  If they don’t have to, most don’t want the hassle of trying to find the florist, the baker, the décor, even the photographer.  If we can give them a package of services along with great food, I can usually make the sale.

Food and drink pairings are growing in popularity.  Sure, you know to have the right wine for each menu item, but do you have the right water?  The right fruit juice?  The right beer?  Offering drinks that complement the food, even mini beverages with hors d’oeuvres, fits with today’s particular consumer and gives me the upsell opportunity.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR:  VOLUNTEERISM FAIRE
April 27, 10 AM – Noon in the Partial Ballroom.

One of the most important functions Board members have is to ensure that each spring we find enough volunteers among residents to staff the eleven statutorily required and standing committees we have here in Sun City Roseville.

The numbers are impressive:  there are 113 volunteer positions on the various committees plus another seven Board positions, for a total of 120 slots.  In any particular year, approximately 40 vacancies need to be filled.

According to our best estimate, Sun City volunteers contribute approximately 31,200 hours of work per year.  If we put a dollar figure to this number, using, say, $20 per hour, we see that our community is benefiting from $624,000 per year in volunteer services.

Besides saving all of us money, volunteering can be rewarding.  By being involved in committees and/or participating in Board activities, homeowners have the chance to work with other residents and get to know them and our community.  They can have the satisfaction of “giving back,” particularly at a time in our lives when we may finally have some free time outside work and home responsibilities.

So, about that Faire:  the event on April 27 is a chance for all to learn more about volunteer opportunities in Sun City Roseville.  The morning will kick off with a short Power Point presentation identifying the various committees.  It will also provide a brief overview of how vital their services are.  In addition, attendees will find out how many volunteers we need for Finance, or Compliance, or Elections, or any of the other eight committees.  Representatives from each of the committees will be available to answer your particular questions.

There’s even going to be a stand-up comedian to set the mood! The gentleman’s name is Lee Belshin, and Lee is known for his highly motivational and humorous presentations.

The monthly eBlast serves as a great communication tool for the Activities Department and I hope you as a resident find these monthly eCouriers useful and that it provides you with a variety of information for all SCR departments. As you may well know, the eCourier comes out the 15th of each month, every month!  I use this as an opportunity to inform you of events in the Timber Creek Lodge and scheduled tours that still have availability to purchase tickets and/or bus seats from the 15th to the 15th of each month.

With that being said, here’s an update. It’s not too late to purchase tickets or register for a seat for the various events and day tours:

Friday, March 24
we’ll welcome the Roseville Community Concert Band from 7:00-8:30PM in the Timber Creek Ballroom. This is a 45-piece volunteer band and will accompany the classic 1926 silent film “The General” starring actor, comedian and stunt man Buster Keaton.  Watch this movie come to life with live music!  Tickets are $15.00 per person.

Sudoku Instructor Russ Abbott is back with a two-session class to teach you Sudoku skills.  This two-part workshop will take place Tuesday, April 4 & April 11 from 9:00AM-11:00AM in the Aspen/Birch rooms and will teach you the skills to complete the puzzles in daily circulation as well as build a framework to tackle the more difficult ones.  The cost is $10 for both sessions.

Friday, April 7 we’ll welcome The Back Pages in the Timber Creek Ballroom from 7:00-9:00PM.  It’s a 1960’s musical festival as they perform songs from the Beatles, the Byrd’s, Creedence, the Monkees, the Rolling Stones, and great one hit wonders. The dance floor will be open! Tickets are $20.00 per person.

We continue to offer speakers through the “Speaker Series”, funded by the Sun City Foundation.  Monday, April 10 we’ll welcome Fred Shoemaker, author of “Extraordinary Golf” and Golf Coach.  Cost is $5.00 per person.

Thursday, March 30Cantor Art Museum/Stanford University Campus & Hosted Lunch at the Fish House in San Mateo on the water.  We’ll enjoy a docent-led tour that includes the Stanford Family Collection with 5,000 pieces of works of art.  Bus departs at 8:00AM; cost is $85.00 per person.

Thursday, April 6 – With spring in the air, join the SCR Garden Club for a day at the San Francisco Flower & Garden Show at the San Mateo Event Center.  Bus departs at 7:30AM; cost is $75.00 per person.

Given that Roseville Police have recently implemented a very state-of-the-art Computer Assisted Dispatch system, I thought I would revisit one of 2015’s articles.  As you read this, read into it that the abilities of the street cops, dispatchers, and detectives to knit together various scraps of information from citizens is now amazing.  That means it is even more important, and more beneficial, to alert the police than it was in 2015.  And, of course, it is still not advantageous to call our Citizens Patrol.

When you observe or encounter suspicious persons or circumstances, call the police.  First and always, call the police.  Why not call Citizens Patrol?

  1. We do not put Citizens Patrol volunteers in harm’s way. They are, after all, Sun City seniors.
  1. The police are trained and experienced. Citizens Patrol volunteers call the police.
  1. The faster the police are alerted or informed the better. A call to Citizens Patrol merely causes unnecessary delay.
  1. You might be the only caller, but you might be sixth. You cannot possibly know whether what you are seeing, or hearing, may be a single piece of a larger puzzle, about which the police may already have some knowledge, or which they can assemble later.
  1. Any cop will tell you this: They do not mind dry runs, so never think it is not important enough.  Dispatchers can only ask you the right operative questions if you call.

Call anyone else after you promptly call the police.  These are actual examples of when our residents called Citizens Patrol and left a message—talk about delayed information—when they absolutely should have called the police first:

  • There is a U-Haul moving van in front of my neighbor’s house.
  • I saw two women carrying shrubbery in grocery bags. I followed them into the apartments on Fiddyment.  I got their apartment numbers.  I took notes on my cell phone.
  • Two teenagers are playing golf in jeans and t-shirts and it is almost dark.
  • Some guy in a van just came to my door and tried to sell me meat.
  • Last night, I smelled a really strange odor.
  • I saw two guys back a van into my neighbor’s driveway. I saw them carry something to the van.  I could not get a license plate number, so I waited until the resident got home.  It was a landscape theft.

Yes, I want to know about such events, but it is knowledge of the results of the police response which enables me to piece the story together and report everything to all of you.

FINANCE

Sun City Roseville Community Association is committed to provide a quality lifestyle for all residents by offering exceptional activities, programs and services.  Further, we strive to skillfully manage and, as appropriate, to enhance association facilities and assets while providing a professional work environment for our employees.

In order to carry out this mission, much planning is required.  Much of this planning is done through the annual budget process, which begins 7-8 months prior to the actual fiscal year beginning.  It begins with volunteer residents (the Board Members and Committee Members) who speak for the residents, residents themselves, and management staff.  Management spends a great deal of time quantifying the activities, programs, services, facility maintenance, and asset enhancements.  As a resident you first see this work in November of each year during a Long Range Planning Meeting and a Budget Objectives Meeting.   Following is the budget schedule for next year’s fiscal budget.

Once the budget is finalized by the Finance Committee and Board of Directors, staff must begin the execution of this plan (Beginning in the new fiscal year).  It is during the monthly Finance Committee Meeting that we monitor the quantified progress and variances to the plan.  For those who wish, attending this meeting can be really helpful in understanding the day to day operations of the community you live in.  And for those of you who wish, the monthly courier is a good source of summarized information.  What ever your choice, please take the time to enjoy the beautiful community in which you live.

Rainy DayGreetings Residents.  This weather reminds me of a childhood rhyme, “Rain Rain Go Away Come Again Another Day.”  The rain keeps coming again and again. The weather is always changing and this year it has been wet and we are grateful for the moisture.  Our waterfowl appear to really be enjoying it but our golfers not so much.  The other side is that Sun City Roseville Golf Courses and common areas look great and the salts from reclaimed water used to irrigate them are being diluted from the soil especially around the trees.  Everything looks fresh and clean. Timber Creek and Sierra Pines are definitely the best looking golf courses in Northern California.

I have enjoyed serving on the Board of Directors of the Sun City Roseville Association since August of 2015. I was elected Board President in August of 2016. Working with fellow directors, committees and staff has been extremely interesting. I feel like we are helping to improve and maintain the life style we all enjoy. With that said I want to encourage our residents to consider volunteering for one of the committees or consider running for the Board of Directors. There will be three open positions on the Board this year. You don’t have to know how everything works (you will learn) and you don’t have to know all the answers as you along with fellow board members and staff will develop the answers together. Committee members and Board members work as a team with the staff to make decisions that are in the best interest of our residents. I firmly believe that the best solutions our developed by a group of people with diverse opinions.

The Sun City Roseville Life Style is maintained because residents volunteer their time and expertise to work with our dedicated employees to sustain Sun City Roseville –  The Premier Active Adult Community in Northern California.

A very special “Thank You” to over 200 residents who braved the wind and rain and delivered the 2017  Membership Directory & Community Guide  to 2,726 residents.  This was the 10th year our Golf Club(s) members have been kind enough to load up their golf cars and spend a long weekend delivering the directory.  The Golf Clubs also received help from their spouses, friends, Bocce Club members, Boomers and more! Much to our dismay, there was a printer error in a limited amount of directories, which deleted the last names beginning with the letter A & letter B. Check your directory, and if your book happens to be one of them, stop in at the Administration Office and we’ll be happy to give you a new directory.

Your Activities Department kicked off the New Year with a toast to trips, travel and fun and sent a resident home with a pair of champagne flutes and a bottle of Domaine Chandon. Tuesday, February 14 we welcomed residents to come “Mix and Mingle” in the Aspen Room while they enjoyed hot chocolate and Ghirardelli chocolates.  We sent a resident home with a free trip to San Francisco with a visit to the popular Buena Vista Café, Ghirardelli Square and Boudin Bakery. Be sure to check the Courier and the monthly “Mark Your Calendar” for activity and travel updates.

As the Activities Department looks ahead, it’s exciting to announce a variety of trips & onsite events for our residents! Resident Cheema James will be presenting “Modoc War: The Tribe that Wouldn’t Die” on Thursday, February 23 from 10:00AM-Noon in the Aspen/Birch/Cedar Rooms. This promises to be a fascinating presentation; please register in advance at the Activities Monitor Desk. You will also find a beautiful display in the Timber Creek Lodge hallway with a collection of Modoc items from Cheewa.  A special thank you to resident Tette Vera who recently took over the large responsibility of coordinating the window each month and displaying a variety of collections from our residents. Thank you Tette!

The February Snow Train Tours are full, join us next year!  Registration opened January 6 for our overnight Monterey Bay Whale Watching Tour scheduled for March 14-15, again, the bus is full! Plan ahead and join us for a variety of Overnight/Extended tours in 2017!

A variety of Day Tours await you! Join us Thursday, March 2 as we visit Hangar One Spirits and a visit to Jack London Square; tour is $80 per person, bus departs at 9:00AM. Wednesday, March 8. We’ll travel to San Francisco and begin the day with a visit to Buena Vista Café for an Irish coffee, a stop at Ghirardelli Square and a tour and box lunch from Boudin Bakery.  Please pick up the Village Courier for a complete listing and descriptions of tours offered through February and March.

Why do we still have it?  I want to be old-fashioned about neighbors getting to know each other, which leads to trusting each other and keeping alive the neighbors-helping-neighbors community lifestyle.  That is why we spend so much time and energy communicating with residents via the email tree.  Digital options exist, such as Twitter and Facebook, and I will likely adopt one in the near future, but only to supplement the email tree, not to replace it.

What do these emails say?  All of my emails bear one of two headings; For Normal Distribution, Please, or, rarely, For Urgent Distribution, Please.  They speak to crime or suspicious activity, to scams, and to activities in which we participate, such as our monthly meeting, or National Night Out.

How is it supposed to work?  Using ordinary email, I have a group email address for 42 Village Communicators, each of whom has a designated geographic area.  Each of them should maintain a group email address for about a dozen Team Links assigned to portions of that area.  Each Team Link should maintain a group email of the dozen or so residents who live in that portion of the area.  Thus, my email should get to the end residents in a day or two.  In other words, with a few keystrokes, the Village Communicators forward my email to the Team Links who, with a few keystrokes, forward it to the end-user residents.

It is separate from eBlast email, which goes out via the SCRCA website to all residents at once, and which I rarely use.

How well does it work?  It only works as well as it is kept current.  Residents often neglect to notify us, or their Team Link, or SCR administration, of changes they make, and that stops delivery to them.  When that resident is a Team Link, email delivery to the entire team can stop, and if no one complains, we are unaware.  Unfortunately, that has happened far too many times, and there are thus far too many holes in the system, or far too many broken links in the chain.  The strongest link seems to be the Village Communicators, who, as far as I know, have been very good at striking those few keystrokes on a timely basis.

How does it get fixed?  If you are not receiving such email, give us a call.  We will dig into the system and find the missing ingredient.

Safety first word on grunge background

Safety Awareness

I was recently asked to address the Properties Committee regarding our safety program.  We have a very strong safety program with excellent results.  The 2017 focus is on increasing safety awareness with employees.  We have a designated safety coordinator for each department.  Their job is to select safety topics to review with employees throughout the year.  I have asked them all to discuss increased awareness along with updating our “Emergency Action Codes” located at each phone.  These codes help us help residents and guests when emergencies occur.  We also conduct an annual fire drill to keep our exit strategies current.  All new employees receive safety training by way of a safety manual and a review of individual work spaces.  Safety is one of our top priorities here at Sun City Roseville.

COME ON DOWN!

“Our new Timbers Lounge and Expanded Restaurant are now Open for Business”, stated Sun City Roseville Executive Director Earl Wiklund at the Ribbon Cutting opening of the completely renovated restaurant On December 26! Board President Linda Breninger, assisted by the expansion project’s Board Steering Committee members Dan Arriola, John Raniseski, Dave Lewis and Tim Hinchey, formally ‘cut the ribbon’ and welcomed the large crowd of residents in attendance.  The formal “Grand Opening’ of this vastly expanded and improved dining environment was enjoyed by several hundred residents who attended the Gala in the new restaurant and the ballroom on New Year’s Eve! A fantastic buffet dinner, complemented by music and dancing in both the ballroom and the restaurant, made it an enjoyable evening for all!

The expansion and reconfiguration of the former Timbers restaurant represents the achievement of a long overdue improvement to Sun City Roseville’s major dining facility. Our residents can now enjoy a delicious meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner) in a spacious and quiet restaurant environment. Or, anytime during the day or evening, they can enjoy a cup of coffee or a libation of their choice with friends in a large and friendly bar-lounge.  Sun City Food and Beverage Director Jason Smith has implemented an expansive and fantastic bar-lounge menu that has received raves of acclaim and appreciation from many residents.

As I have indicated in recent Courier articles and email notices, and in my remarks at the ribbon cutting, this major improvement was initiated over 3 years ago when a resident work group defined the design requirements and the floor plan layout for the expansion that are now a reality! In the ensuing three years, over 30 resident volunteers and Sun City staff members have refined the design specifications and overseen the planning and construction activities  that have brought the new Timbers Lounge and Restaurant online for resident enjoyment for years to come.

Working together with the architect, the city of Roseville and the contractor, the resident/staff teams have assured that the following original major objectives set by the resident work group in 2013-2014 have been achieved:

  1. Provide a separate bar/cocktail lounge area accessible directly from the existing reception area.
  2. Increase the size of the dedicated bar/lounge area to have additional seats at the bar and several tables for customers to have drinks, and or take advantage of an expanded bar menu, while waiting for a restaurant table or to just enjoy casual dining.
  3. Provide a “See Through” sound barrier between the restaurant and the bar/lounge to ensure a quiet dining experience in the restaurant.
  4. Ensure easily accessed seating in the bar/lounge for golfers “making the turn’, or wishing to relax after an 18 hole round.
  5. Provide additional seating in the restaurant for peak dining times and special dinner events.
  6. Provide additional restroom capacity and ease of access with minimal traffic through the restaurant.
  7. Provide for expanded covered patio dining with direct access to the bar.
  8. Provide for optimum placement of the temporary dance floor that minimizes congestion and traffic flow problems.
  9. Provide a resident-perceived improvement in appearance, atmosphere, accessibility, reception and convenience that enhances customer enjoyment without adverse impact on staff logistics or serving capabilities.

Based on what I have personally observed in several visits and dining experiences in the new lounge and expanded restaurant, and from the personal feedback and comments from many residents, I believe the objectives set by the resident work group in 2013-2014 have been achieved!  There are a few remaining minor enhancements, and initial experience-related resident suggestions, that will be implemented over time. However, the initial resident responses have been overwhelmingly positive.

So, if you have not yet had the opportunity to enjoy a casual or formal dining experience in the new lounge or expanded restaurant, I encourage you to, “Come on Down!” I believe you will enjoy the experience.

Gregg Isett, professional organist, will perform in the Timber Creek Lodge Friday, February 3; tickets are $10.00 and available at the Activities Monitor Desk. Resident Cheewa James will be presenting “Modoc War: The Tribe that Wouldn’t Die” on Thursday, February 23 from 10:00AM-Noon in the Aspen/Birch/Cedar Rooms.  This promises to be a fascinating presentation; please register in advance. The New Year will bring us top notch entertainment, including new bands, a comedian, a variety show and more!

Bus trips are nearly full!  There may be a few seats left to Red Hawk Casino on Tuesday, January 24. Tickets are $30.00 per person and include $15 in slot money. Open seats are available on several on the February day tours including a visit to the magnificent Performing Arts Centers in San Francisco on Monday, February 6.  Cost is $90.00 and includes a hosted lunch at the popular Max’s Opera Café on Van Ness.  Take advantage of the arts in your community and join us for an afternoon performance Wednesday, February 8 with the Russian National Ballet, performing “Sleeping Beauty” at the Harris Center in Folsom. There may be just a few seats left for the “Monet: Early Years” Exhibit scheduled for Tuesday, February 28 at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco; cost is $78.00 per person. This is essentially a re-write of last January’s piece, but I know we have continual turnover of residents, so it may be fresh to you, and everyone should know what we, the staff, do to keep our residents safe, crime low and property values high.

First of all, there would be no justification for “we, the staff” were it not for the hundreds of resident volunteers in both CP/NW, so the better question is how do they do what they do?

They do it very well.  CP continues to close, on average, 150 residence garage doors each month—350 per month during the summer.  Think of it as preventing 150 opportunities for theft, or perhaps worse crimes, via open garage doors.  The volunteers are ever mindful that an open garage door may be an indication to check on the welfare of the resident.

It is impossible to tally the good work done in NW, however, on three occasions in the past two years, residents have recognized indications a welfare check was needed for a neighbor, and called the police.  These neighbors were incapacitated inside, and their lives thus saved.  Is it any wonder why we, the staff, enjoy what we do?

I am a half-time employee, and a resident.  Our half-time secretary position is job-shared by residents Karen Jope & Linda Vincent such that they provide five day coverage.

Linda and Karen manage day-to-day operations of CP.  Their most trying task is finding replacement volunteers when those scheduled cannot come in.  (Please refer to last month’s article, “We Need You.”)  The Deployment Roster thus changes several times each week, and they re-print it and re-post it on-line.  They also manage day-to-day operations of NW, updating neighbor and relative emergency contacts, and email or phone changes, and sustaining the email tree.  Most of that work is done on the phone, and both Karen and Linda have great phone etiquette and people skills.

Their efforts free me up to interact with the police and other agencies, send out email alerts and informative emails, train CP volunteers, market our monthly meetings and recruit keynote speakers, and attend to projects like purchasing vehicles and writing training manuals.

Please drop in any time (8:00 to Noon).  We try to make it fun for you to pick up a Vial of Life or No Soliciting sign, provide us updated information, alert us to problems, ask questions—or even to complain about something.  Fun is one thing we, the staff, do.

Securing Sun City’s Financial Future While Continuing to Enjoy our Lifestyle

On April 4, 2016, Governor Brown signed into law SB 3 which mandates new minimum wage increases beginning in 2016 and continuing through 2022. All minimum wage employees affected will see their wages raise from $9.50 per hour to $15.00 per hour by 2022. Thereafter, wages will be adjusted each year according to the previous year’s inflation rate.  Adhering to these legal mandates will have a major impact upon Association financial planning and budget development going forward.

Also having a major impact upon current and future financial planning is Sun City’s aging infrastructure which will require higher maintenance, repair or replacement costs that will be paid for from Reserve Funding.  As reserve funding is drawn down, these funds will need to be replaced in order to continue to keep our Reserves funded at 100%.

The Board also realizes that all residents living here and new residents moving in have a deep desire to live the Sun City Lifestyle as identified in our Vision and Mission Statements. Residents have an expectation that exceptional activities, amenities, facilities, programs and services will continue to be available and provided by our excellent staff.

With the above in mind, the Board has undertaken a comprehensive process to evaluate all aspects of the budget and engage in a strategic planning process that identifies and prioritizes needed improvements.  Included in this process is looking at all revenue sources, possibly increasing fees to raise existing revenue streams and  evaluating costs/expenses in the operational budget in order to help minimize assessment increases.

We are spending considerable time in identifying possible new revenue sources, what these might look like, the amount of funds that could be generated to offset the impact of minimum wage requirements, aging infrastructure needs and needed improvements. Our goal is to minimize assessment increases.  We will continue to keep you updated on our progress and look forward to your support as we continue this work.

Tickets are available for our first Speaker Series of the New Year. We’ll welcome back Marc Lapadula, Senior Lecturer at Yale University in the Film Studies Program as he presents “Greatest Films in American Cinema.” Your Activities Department is delighted to bring these presentations to the community, funded by the Sun City Roseville Foundation – working together to enhance and promote the Sun City Lifestyle!

Each year, thousands of fitness professionals are surveyed around the world and a list of fitness trends for the year is released. This year, wearable technology came out as the leading trend for 2017. Wearable technology includes activity trackers, smart watches, heart rate monitors, and GPS tracking devices. Interestingly, smart glasses are also in this category which has predicted sales of $1.5 billion. Of note, this category of technology in relation to fitness is separate from smartphone exercise apps which ranked separately at 17 in the list of trends. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH / CITIZENS PATROL

This is, after all, a senior community, and, as such, we experience constant resident turnover.  Occasionally, that dynamic seems to come in waves, and many times it thins out the ranks of our Citizen Patrol Volunteer (CPV) force.  As a result, we are currently having a really difficult time filling the slots.

This is a plea to all residents to give Citizens Patrol a look and consider joining.  The following will give you some insight about what you can expect and how we do what we do.

Scheduling/Commitment

Many residents are surprised to learn that most of our Citizen Patrol Volunteers (CPVs) commit to only one 2.5 hour evening shift per month.

Because we are shorthanded, some CPVs are stepping up to do more than one shift per month.  But consider…if we doubled our force, each CPV would only have to commit to once every other month.

We schedule with the complete understanding that most CPVs are retired and active, travel, and occasionally get sick.  We try to assign CPVs to a stable given shift, such as every third Tuesday evening, but we also offer daytime patrol—which we want to increase—and an on-call pool from which we draw to replace CPVs who cannot come in due to vacations, and so on.

Just what is it CPVs do?

After being trained and provided a manual, and going out once with an experienced CPV, you and a partner—your spouse, a friend, or someone we found for you—will go out in one of our high visibility Toyota Rav4s.  Two others will go out in the other car.  Each pair covers half of our campus.

By high visibility, we mean they are orange—“hot lava” is what Toyota calls it—with a lit roof top sign.  You won’t be sneaking up on any knuckleheads, and we never put you in harm’s way.  We do not confront suspicious people or circumstances.  Rather, we are eyes and ears for the police; we observe and report.

One big focus is on ensuring that all garage doors are closed.  We close 150 per month on average, with 350 per month during the summer.  That may seem like an insignificant endeavor.  But, consider the opposite.  It would not take long for thieves to spread the word that, on any given night, they could find a half-dozen garages standing wide open over in Sun City.  We also ensure that it was not a medical emergency which rendered the resident unable to close the door.

Other than the warm and fuzzy feeling you will get knowing that you have given back to this wonderful community and have helped to keep people safe, crime low, and property values high, there is a breakfast each January.  The top 100 CPVs, in terms of their volunteer hours, enjoy the wonderful Timbers Restaurant full buffet breakfast, and keynote speeches from the president of our Board of Directors, and the chiefs of the Roseville Police and Fire Departments, all of whom will recognize your service and tell you how valuable you are as a CPV—because you are.

Where Does the Money go and Why???

Attention home owners, it’s that time of year again!  Time to begin the process to prepare and approve the budget for the 2017 – 2018 Fiscal Year.  Dry stuff no doubt, but important to all if the end product will ensure that Sun City Roseville remains the “Premiere Adult Community in Northern California.” The objective – approve a budget that “covers all necessary operating expenses, capital asset additions, and replacement reserve contributions consistent with current economic conditions and forecasts.”

The most frequently asked questions pertaining to the budget seem to be: “will my annual assessment increase?”, “what do I get for what I give?” and “How will I know?”  For long term and new homeowners alike, there is good news!  There are many opportunities in the next 6 months for you to get answers to these questions by participating in public sessions that will review the proposed budget prepared by the Association’s Executive Director and staff and recommend a final version to the Board of Directors for approval.

It you really want to know what goes on behind the curtain, please join your friends and neighbors on the path to approval during the Finance Committee and Staff review of the Long Range Financial Goals and the Association’s Budget Guidelines for FY 2017 – 2018 on November 15th.   Once approved by the Board of Directors, the guidelines will serve as a framework to:

  • Minimize, where possible, increases in the FY 17-18 homeowner assessment
  • Provide the staffing, equipment, and material needed to operate and maintain the provide approved programs and services
  • Meet revenue and expense projections to operate and maintain the Common Areas including Timber Creek and Sierra Pines golf courses needed to provide approved programs and services
  • Fund required and essential Reserve and Capital projects and asset acquisitions

Look forward to meeting you as we begin the journey to give us all confidence in “where the money goes and why.”

Believe it or not, the holidays have arrived!

We have just a few seats left for the December 1-2, 2016 Reno Overnight.  Join us for an overnight with a dinner buffet and a holiday performance, “Miracle on 34th Street,” at the Eldorado Hotel & Casino. Registration is open for the January 16-22, 2017 Solvang to Palm Springs, CA Tour.  Registration for the Snow Train Tours opened November 4 and we are nearing full on both buses. Register soon! You may register at the Activities Desk Monday through Saturday from 7:30AM-9:00PM and Sundays from 10:00AM to 8:00PM.

November day tours are still open. Monday, November 21 will find us in Old Sacramento with a fascinating and entertaining tour of the underground tunnels and a hosted lunch at the popular Firehouse Restaurant.  Cost is $85.00 per person; bus departs at 9:30AM. Enjoy an afternoon in San Francisco on Tuesday, November 29 as we kick off the holidays with a visit to Union Square.  We’ll provide you with a complimentary Macy’s tote bag and 10% coupon when you board the bus.  Cost is $50.00 person; bus departs at 7:30AM.

We have added a second bus for the January 8, 2017 Cirque du Soleil-LUZIA performance under the Big Top at A T & T Park in San Francisco.  Registration is open for tickets; tickets are $135.00 per person and selling quickly. Why not purchase tickets as a holiday gift for your spouse, or a friend?

Cardio Dance: Dance your way into fitness with hits of yesterday and today in this fast moving cardiovascular class, Wednesdays at 12PM with Cindy

Therapeutic Yoga: Link your breath with movement in a way that will heal and change your body with a focus on a different part of the body in each class. Participants must be able to get up and down from the floor, Mondays at 3PM with Jody

Yoga Basics: Perfect for new yogis or those who want to focus their practice on the basic poses. Participants must be able to get up and down from the floor. 2:30PM on Tuesdays (with Arlene) and Thursdays (with Gina)

Yoga Flow: For the experienced yogi who wants to challenge their yoga practice with strength and stamina. Participants must be able to get up and down from the floor. Wednesdays at 2 PM with Cindy.

Tai Chi Yang Style: Learn the short form of the Yang style of Tai Chi. Beginners welcome. Tuesdays with Jody, beginning 11/29, at 11AM.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH / CITIZENS PATROL

treeI hope you have wrapped up your Christmas shopping.  Pun intended.  But if you still need trips to the mall, here are a few safety tips.

  1. Shop with a friend, or several friends. There is safety in numbers.
  2. Scout the area where you will park for suspicious persons lurking about and watching. Park in well-lit areas, and/or as close as possible to the entrance.
  3. Any time you return to the car, have your antenna up (no, silly goose, not the car’s antenna) for knuckle- heads lurking and watching. If you become wary, go back inside and ask mall security to escort you.
  4. Have your keys at the ready to enable you to either hit the panic button, or promptly open your car. You don’t want to be setting your packages down and then fumbling around for your keys.
  5. If you bring packages back to the car, planning to go back into the mall for more shopping, lock the packages in the trunk, or otherwise cover them. Consider driving away, and returning to park elsewhere, so you appear to be an arriving shopper.
  6. Give children a plan for if you become separated. Absent cell phone communication, instruct them to stay put, to step into a store and contact a clerk, and to know you will look for them by going store-to-store where you last saw them.  Ensure they know their name, address, and phone number, or have it written down.
  7. Do not dress up. Sorry ladies, but expensive attire and bling are magnets for knuckleheads.  Carry only the charge cards and ID you will need for the day—in a front pocket.
  8. If you lose your credit or debit card, call the company or bank immediately, from the mall, so it will be declined. Thus, it is possible any knucklehead using it will get caught while still in the mall.  (Even if you don’t lose a card, check all your statements frequently to expose any fraud.)

Bonus Tip from Karen, Linda & I:  Take care of each other’s package deliveries, tell each other about travel plans, and have a Very Merry Christmas.

BOARD MEMBER REPORT

Your Board has been at work for almost three months now.  An update on our progress with regard to our Board goals and some other important items is in order:

  • Focus continues on completing the Timbers expansion. From what I have seen as a new member of the expansion team, you are going to really like the finished product.
  • We have now got a team of three Board members together with our Executive Director working on prioritizing the various projects targeted for 2017/18 and beyond. As this work comes to fruition, we will share the results with everyone for their input.
  • As liaison to the Properties committee, I have been asked to pass on a detailed charge to the Properties’ Energy sub-group with regard to what the Board expects to aid us in achieving greater energy efficiencies and reduced utility costs.
  • Finally, the Staff and Properties committee are already working on: improving the Ballroom Audio/Video capabilities, converting the indoor pool to salt water, increasing community street safety and Bocce court improvements.

There is still time to enjoy several day tours before the rain arrives, and before you find yourself busy with your many Club & Group activities, holiday parties, etc. Registration remains open for Apple Hill on Friday, October 21, and includes four orchard stops, a hosted lunch and beer tasting at Jack Russell Brewery.  Cost is $62.00 per person; bus departs at 8:45AM.  There are just a few seats left for the Feather Falls day tour scheduled for Tuesday, October 25.  Cost is $28.00 person; bus departs at 8:30AM for a five hour stay.

This year we purchased a season subscription for the Broadway Sacramento Series.  A season subscription allows us better seating choices, and carries over for priority scheduling the next year.  I had an overwhelming response for interest in all performances.  We have eleven tickets left for the Sound of Music performance on October 31. Grab a friend and come see this three-time Tony Award winner!  Tickets are $85.00 per person; bus departs at 12:30PM.

Take advantage of the November tours as we provide a variety of activities! Please refer to the October Village Courier to view the scheduled trips.  Tuesday, November 8 we will visit the new Golden 1 Center as the Sacramento Kings take on the New Orleans Pelicans.  At this time, there are only four seats left!  Cost is $120.00 per person; bus departs at 4:30PM.  I do not anticipate purchasing game tickets on a regular basis, but do have one additional date on the calendar for a game – April 4, 2017. Look for information in the March 2017 Courier.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH / CITIZENS PATROLCollection of colorful pillsDrug Take Back Event

Saturday  |  October 22nd  |  New Time – 9:00 am to 1:00 pm

It’s that time again—The Roseville Police Department, in cooperation with federal and state agencies, is offering this free service, which allows you to conveniently dispose of any medicines or drugs for which you no longer have need.

The location for the service will be the parking area along the tennis, pickleball and basketball courts, at the north end of the main lodge parking lot.  Look for the squad car.

Accepted are any prescription or non-prescription medicines, controlled substances, or veterinary medication.  They prefer that you pool all the pills and capsules into a zip-lock bag, but it is not required; a paper bag full of pill bottles will suffice.  Liquids should be left in their original bottles.  However, they cannot accept hypodermic needles, medical waste, aerosols, hydrogen peroxide, or illegal street drugs.

The benefits and purpose of this program:

  • Young children all too often ingest meds accidently, which they find in the medicine cabinets of various family members
  • Nearly every thief is either a drug addict or knows several, so it helps to advertise that Sun City gets rid of what knuckleheads want
  • It helps prevent seniors from confusing which is the right or wrong medication, which can happen when quantities of expired or no-longer prescribed medicines pile up
  • Teenagers all too often abuse meds, which they can “appropriate” from the medicine cabinets of various family members
  • Medicines which are flushed down the toilet, or dumped in the trash, end up contaminating our water supplies, wildlife, and folks handling our refuse

Let people elsewhere in western Placer County know of these additional locations during the same time slot:  Del Oro, Granite Bay, Whitney and Roseville High Schools, Lincoln Police Department, Sierra College, Auburn City Hall, Dewitt Justice Center in Auburn, and Kaiser Hospital on Rocky Ridge Road.

COMMUNITY STANDARDS

Contractor / Service Referral

Have you recently had work done at your home?  Now take a minute to assess the situation.   Was the project completed on time and were you satisfied with the work performed?  If so, and you would like to recommend the person and/or business who provided the service to you, please stop by the Administration Office and fill out a referral recommendation form.

Once completed, these forms are available to view on our website and hard copies may be found in the referral binder which is available at the monitor’s desk for review by residents.  The intent of these referral forms is to assist other homeowners looking for similar services to be performed at their homes.

The Community Association staff does not refer or personally endorse any of the businesses listed for review. The information contained within the service referral binder is information provided solely by our homeowners who have utilized the services.  Referrals are available to review for one year after the date submitted and are then removed to ensure only current referrals are offered.

If you have had an unpleasant experience with a business or person did you know you may also fill out a form and that too is made available for review.  It is an effective way to gain exposure and to share your displeasure about a business or person instead of littering the community with negative signage which causes visual blight and detracts from the overall beauty of our community.

Should we receive three (3) negative reviews from concerned homeowners regarding a business or person currently in the referral binder that business and/or person’s referral sheet will be promptly removed.

The referral program has proven to be a great asset to our community members therefore, we strongly encourage that you take the time to utilize this service and share your experience with your fellow homeowners both positive and negative.
