Rainy DayGreetings Residents.  This weather reminds me of a childhood rhyme, “Rain Rain Go Away Come Again Another Day.”  The rain keeps coming again and again. The weather is always changing and this year it has been wet and we are grateful for the moisture.  Our waterfowl appear to really be enjoying it but our golfers not so much.  The other side is that Sun City Roseville Golf Courses and common areas look great and the salts from reclaimed water used to irrigate them are being diluted from the soil especially around the trees.  Everything looks fresh and clean. Timber Creek and Sierra Pines are definitely the best looking golf courses in Northern California.

I have enjoyed serving on the Board of Directors of the Sun City Roseville Association since August of 2015. I was elected Board President in August of 2016. Working with fellow directors, committees and staff has been extremely interesting. I feel like we are helping to improve and maintain the life style we all enjoy. With that said I want to encourage our residents to consider volunteering for one of the committees or consider running for the Board of Directors. There will be three open positions on the Board this year. You don’t have to know how everything works (you will learn) and you don’t have to know all the answers as you along with fellow board members and staff will develop the answers together. Committee members and Board members work as a team with the staff to make decisions that are in the best interest of our residents. I firmly believe that the best solutions our developed by a group of people with diverse opinions.

The Sun City Roseville Life Style is maintained because residents volunteer their time and expertise to work with our dedicated employees to sustain Sun City Roseville –  The Premier Active Adult Community in Northern California.

Things to look for in March 2017:

  • Timber Creek is now live on Golf Now in February! If people are interested, direct them to www.golfnow.com
  • New Callaway and Taylormade equipment! Head into the shop to see and demo the new Callaway Epic woods, and Taylormade M1 and M2 woods.
  • Come get fit for your golf equipment at Timber Creek. Use the launch monitor (Flightscope) to make sure your clubs are working for you! Use it for your favorite brands: Taylormade, Srixon, Wilson, XXIO, Callaway, and many more!
  • Check out the new Million Dollar Bar in the Timber Creek Lodge! New menu, entertainment, and look!
  • Patrick day event in the bar. All day drink specials with green beer! After your round head into the bar and enjoy the updated menu and scenery.

A very special “Thank You” to over 200 residents who braved the wind and rain and delivered the 2017  Membership Directory & Community Guide  to 2,726 residents.  This was the 10th year our Golf Club(s) members have been kind enough to load up their golf cars and spend a long weekend delivering the directory.  The Golf Clubs also received help from their spouses, friends, Bocce Club members, Boomers and more! Much to our dismay, there was a printer error in a limited amount of directories, which deleted the last names beginning with the letter A & letter B. Check your directory, and if your book happens to be one of them, stop in at the Administration Office and we’ll be happy to give you a new directory.

Your Activities Department kicked off the New Year with a toast to trips, travel and fun and sent a resident home with a pair of champagne flutes and a bottle of Domaine Chandon. Tuesday, February 14 we welcomed residents to come “Mix and Mingle” in the Aspen Room while they enjoyed hot chocolate and Ghirardelli chocolates.  We sent a resident home with a free trip to San Francisco with a visit to the popular Buena Vista Café, Ghirardelli Square and Boudin Bakery. Be sure to check the Courier and the monthly “Mark Your Calendar” for activity and travel updates.

As the Activities Department looks ahead, it’s exciting to announce a variety of trips & onsite events for our residents! Resident Cheema James will be presenting “Modoc War: The Tribe that Wouldn’t Die” on Thursday, February 23 from 10:00AM-Noon in the Aspen/Birch/Cedar Rooms. This promises to be a fascinating presentation; please register in advance at the Activities Monitor Desk. You will also find a beautiful display in the Timber Creek Lodge hallway with a collection of Modoc items from Cheewa.  A special thank you to resident Tette Vera who recently took over the large responsibility of coordinating the window each month and displaying a variety of collections from our residents. Thank you Tette!

The February Snow Train Tours are full, join us next year!  Registration opened January 6 for our overnight Monterey Bay Whale Watching Tour scheduled for March 14-15, again, the bus is full! Plan ahead and join us for a variety of Overnight/Extended tours in 2017!

A variety of Day Tours await you! Join us Thursday, March 2 as we visit Hangar One Spirits and a visit to Jack London Square; tour is $80 per person, bus departs at 9:00AM. Wednesday, March 8. We’ll travel to San Francisco and begin the day with a visit to Buena Vista Café for an Irish coffee, a stop at Ghirardelli Square and a tour and box lunch from Boudin Bakery.  Please pick up the Village Courier for a complete listing and descriptions of tours offered through February and March.

nw_emailtree2The Neighborhood Watch Email Tree

Why do we still have it?  I want to be old-fashioned about neighbors getting to know each other, which leads to trusting each other and keeping alive the neighbors-helping-neighbors community lifestyle.  That is why we spend so much time and energy communicating with residents via the email tree.  Digital options exist, such as Twitter and Facebook, and I will likely adopt one in the near future, but only to supplement the email tree, not to replace it.

What do these emails say?  All of my emails bear one of two headings; For Normal Distribution, Please, or, rarely, For Urgent Distribution, Please.  They speak to crime or suspicious activity, to scams, and to activities in which we participate, such as our monthly meeting, or National Night Out.

How is it supposed to work?  Using ordinary email, I have a group email address for 42 Village Communicators, each of whom has a designated geographic area.  Each of them should maintain a group email address for about a dozen Team Links assigned to portions of that area.  Each Team Link should maintain a group email of the dozen or so residents who live in that portion of the area.  Thus, my email should get to the end residents in a day or two.  In other words, with a few keystrokes, the Village Communicators forward my email to the Team Links who, with a few keystrokes, forward it to the end-user residents.

It is separate from eBlast email, which goes out via the SCRCA website to all residents at once, and which I rarely use.

How well does it work?  It only works as well as it is kept current.  Residents often neglect to notify us, or their Team Link, or SCR administration, of changes they make, and that stops delivery to them.  When that resident is a Team Link, email delivery to the entire team can stop, and if no one complains, we are unaware.  Unfortunately, that has happened far too many times, and there are thus far too many holes in the system, or far too many broken links in the chain.  The strongest link seems to be the Village Communicators, who, as far as I know, have been very good at striking those few keystrokes on a timely basis.

How does it get fixed?  If you are not receiving such email, give us a call.  We will dig into the system and find the missing ingredient.

Safety first word on grunge background

Safety Awareness

I was recently asked to address the Properties Committee regarding our safety program.  We have a very strong safety program with excellent results.  The 2017 focus is on increasing safety awareness with employees.  We have a designated safety coordinator for each department.  Their job is to select safety topics to review with employees throughout the year.  I have asked them all to discuss increased awareness along with updating our “Emergency Action Codes” located at each phone.  These codes help us help residents and guests when emergencies occur.  We also conduct an annual fire drill to keep our exit strategies current.  All new employees receive safety training by way of a safety manual and a review of individual work spaces.  Safety is one of our top priorities here at Sun City Roseville.
